Avec « Mon cher mari » et « Je ne bouge pas d’ici », Rumena Buzarovska s’est imposée comme l’une des voixcontemporaines les plus réjouissantes. « Tony », son nouveau roman, est corrosif à souhait. On y suit lesvacances en Grèce, au bord de la mer, de Tony, pour qui rien ne va. Son bridge lui joue des tours, sa « copine »Tamara tire la tête, leur fils T.J ne cesse de râler, l’appartement de location n’a rien de paradisiaque ! Ajoutez àcela un vent vigoureux qui lui fait perdre son short et ses lunettes de vue ! C’est l’histoire contemporaine d’un quinqua qui retourne vivre chez sa mère. Et ne tire visiblement aucune leçon. Avec Tony, Rumena Bužarovska s’attaque au mâle qui se croit alpha dans toute sa splendeur… ou plutôt sa médiocrité. Tony est narcissique, lâche, franchement détestable et drôle sans le vouloir. Originaire de Macédoine, l’autrice signe une satire enlevée d’une masculinité mal placée, qui trouve sa place dans une littérature des Balkans souvent mésestimée.

And yet, Toni gives the novel its title and is its absolute protagonist. And I must admit, he becomes odious. He is a detestable character for everything he does, feels, and suffers, and for how he does it, how he seems not to feel it, and his utter lack of awareness of anything beyond himself; Rumena Bužarovska has nailed him.

Dark, addictive, and brutally funny, Toni takes the universe of  My Husband  and  I’m Not Going Anywhere  into new territory: that of the great novel about the macho man in freefall. The Macedonian writer continues to cruelly push this kind of abhorrent male character. And she does so with a pitch-black, super-acidic, uncomfortable humor , which has become her trademark, until she turns the story into a grotesque farce. She also holds up a distorting mirror to men , but also to women. The question Buzarovska leaves hanging is unsettling: What if, once those layers of good manners are peeled back, we discover that there’s a Tony not far from us?
